ABOUT US

Our project is a consortium of seven public secondary schools from Catalonia coordinated by the Sub-Directorate of Language and Plurilingualism of the Catalan regional Ministry of Education

Coordinator

One of the main goals of our organisation, the Department of Education of Catalonia is to foster the development of innovative projects related to new pedagogical approaches and inclusive curricula. One of the main cornerstones of our policy and practice is including new insights and a whole-school, cross-curricular perspective.

Following Council of Europe recommendations on the importance of competences in the language(s) of schooling for equity and equality in education and for educational success, our organisation has established plurilingual and intercultural competence as one of the strategic actions to ensure educational success. This strategic action has triggered the revision of the language curricula which has ended up in an integrated language curriculum to help address our students’ needs.

The implementation of this approach to learning languages requires the development of new frameworks that enable school boards and teachers to achieve learning efficiencies.

The Home and Foreign Language Unit of the DOE has taken different actions to do so by designing training programmes, which explore new structures and pedagogical approaches that facilitate integrating language teaching across the curriculum and across languages, and the internationalisation of our schools. The main principles underpinning them are aligned with the EU specific goals for 2020:

  • Neuroscience research, constructivism and  connectivism to make students aware of their own linguistic and cultural repertoire
  • Integration of ICT to solve real problems and improve the communicative competence to interact in a multilingual and pluricultural world
  • Development of life skills to ensure our students’ success worldwid

The coordination of this consortium is enabling us to build a structured and potentially stable, long-term network between schools working on plurilingual competence, obtain best practices and enhance the participation of other units in Erasmus+ projects.
